Obesity is a major health burden of pandemic proportions and is plaguing both the adult and pediatric population. Overall, 13% of the world’s population (˃ 600 million people) were categorized as obese in 2014. In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 650 million adults were affected by this disease…a prevalence that has tripled since 1975.

Bariatric surgery is currently the most effective long-term therapy for the management of adults who are severely obese, with the greatest impact in achieving prolonged weight loss. It is cost-effective and leads to significant reductions in morbidity and mortality, while improving psychosocial functioning and quality of life.

The underlying mechanisms of the beneficial effects of bariatric surgery are complex and include:

  1. Changes in gastrointestinal autonomy and motility
  2. Changes in diet and behavior
  3. Bile acid flow
  4. Gut hormones
  5. Gut bacteria

The most common performed surgical procedure is sleeve gastrectomy, which removes up to 80% of the stomach anatomy. This procedure, and similar anatomical reductions, cause a myriad of side effects as a result of the surgical procedure and related co-morbidities including micronutrient deficiencies and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

To date, there are no evidence-based or uniform protocols for choosing the most appropriate type of bariatric surgery. The surgery chosen is determined by the patient’s request, together with the surgeon’s experience, while also taking into consideration existing co-morbidities.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

In November of 2017, Mr. Ronald Cotner, the founder and Principal of Humanfactor Medical, was awarded U.S.Patent No. 9,808,329 B2, A Device for Preventing Overexpansion of Bodily Organ.

The Intellectual Property was created and designed around known and existing technological achievements of Mr. Cotner and his previously issued patents. Using these IP patents and the accompanying 15 allowed claims, he created an entirely unique device to treat patients suffering from the issues associated with morbid obesity and its co-morbidities.

The first and only device of its kind…

A breakthrough in the field of Bariatric Medicine/Surgery.

The Gastric Glove™ is a device that wraps around the entirety of the stomach and limits its expansion without requiring dissection or removal of any part of the stomach or intestine.

This device has incorporated into its design the ability to overcome the side effects and co-morbidities of the current bariatric surgery procedures, while maintaining the complete, natural structure of the bodily organs. Its design allows for the normal function of the stomach and the associated digestive process. The entirety of the design of the Gastric Glove™ is to prevent over-expansion of the normal, resting-sized stomach, allowing for normal, routine ingestion of food, just limiting the amount able to be consumed, creating an interceptive response of the patient feeling full.

The Gastric Glove™ is covered by United States Utility Patent: 9,808,329
