Portable Cleaning Station for Physically Disabled Patients

There are an estimated 42.5 million Americans with disabilities making up 13% of the population (US Census Bureau 2021).  This group includes people with hearing, vision, cognitive, walking, self-care or independent living difficulties.  According to the CDC those with self-care disabilities comprise approximately 3.6% or 1.53 million Americans.  These loved ones need help with the basic personal hygiene activities we all take for granted.

Personal hygiene is a preventative health measure that serves emotional and social as well as physical well-being.  It protects us against the spread of disease from external parasites or from contact with bodily secretions.  It protects our most sensitive skin against rashes and sores from contact with urine and feces, while keeping up morale helping to avoid depression.  Bathing everyday can keep skin healthy and illness at bay, not to mention make you feel fresh and clean.  Don’t we all feel better at the end of the day when we can wash off our day?

Disabled individuals don’t always have that option.  Severe disabilities can leave a patient with less than effective traditional bed baths, or sponge baths that may not meet their need for hygiene care of more sensitive areas. They need our assistance to safely maintain their basic hygiene and care.  How do we help those who need our help, while still maintaining their dignity and self-esteem?  There are tools to help a person and their caregivers but not all provide the thorough cleaning needed to maintain optimal hygiene and prevent secondary health issues.  Also, many of today’s available assistive care options can be hard on our caregivers.

The Portable Cleaning Station for Physically Disabled Patients may be the solution to safe an effective bathing for those who need assistance.

PRODUCT DETAILS

Providing caregivers with a safe and discreet way to administer personal hygiene to their patients is vital for both the caregiver and the patient.  Keeping the patient clean is important in combating illness and maintaining their self-esteem, while the ability to accomplish this task with safe, quick, and easy facilitation is beneficial for the caregiver, while also maintain the comfort of the patient.  A patient who is bedridden may often find it difficult to maintain their personal hygiene standards by themselves, and will therefore require the assistance of a caregiver.
Generally, a patient is given a bed bath or placed within a shower gurney, a shower stall, or a bathtub.  The options of a shower gurney, a shower stall, or a bathtub can sometimes be difficult and/or unsafe for some patients due to their lack of mobility or may require multiple caregivers.  A bed bath can sometimes be limiting as the bed bath, or sponge bath, is not able to provide proper cleanliness to the patient.

The Portable Cleaning Station for Physically Disabled Patients provides the option of a more complete bathing experience then the traditional sponge or bed bath for those patients for whom the alternatives may not be safe.

The Portable Cleaning Station for Physically Disabled Patients consists of a portable curved platform that can be placed on a bed and the bedridden patient may be lifted and placed on the platform.

The platform has a pair of head supports adjustably mounted on the top edge to support the patients head.  The pair of adjustable hip supports help to provide stability for the patient’s body.  The adjustable heel supports provide added stability and a resting place for the patient’s feet.  The platform has a series of back supports located on the torso section which provide support for the patient as well as allowing the gray water to drain towards the basin.  The platform has an integrated basin and handheld water nozzle specifically geared towards cleaning the ischial, sacrum, and perineal areas that often do not receive the thorough cleansing needed to prevent secondary infections and sores.

The bidet system is integrated into the platform near the heel supports to provide a source of clean water to be used while cleansing the patient and preventing the hose from tangling around the patient’s body.  The system has a hose that can be attached to a water source such as a faucet, water spout, or other clean water source.  The basin is positioned below the hip supports and has an integrated drain that allows the gray water to be discharged thru a hose into a shower drain, tub, or other portable reservoir.  Optionally, the drain may include a flow control valve to allow the basin to continuously drain or be filled with clean water for washing.

While designed for use on a bed the Portable Cleaning Station for Physically Disabled Patients may also be utilized with a removable stabilizing base structure that can be mounted to the platform to overcome the curvature of the platform body.
